We wanted to add some new pieces to our Tarot card series to be part of our latest show, and the Page of Cups felt like the perfect choice! 🙌 This card is associated with creativity, emotion, intuition, and the youthful curiosity and the openness of childhood, which really resonates with the ideas we explore in this latest show.

The imagery of this card depicts a youthful messenger of creativity and intuition, someone guided more by wonder and play than by logic! Here we have depicted the Page as Abigail when she was a little girl and, similar to the traditional card, she sits by the sea, referencing memories of our childhood seaside holidays that have stayed with us long after we have grown up.

The suit of Cups relates to the emotional world of dreams, love and imagination. So in our Page of Cups the Page is absorbed in a dreamlike moment, indulging in creativity and play. She’s listening to music through a Walkman with shell headphones, a nod to the way children try to hear the sea through a seashell! We chose a nostalgic Slush Puppie cup to depict the ‘Cup’, and also kept true to the traditional symbolism of the card by including a fish within the imagery, though here it appears as an unsettling fish bone buried in the sand!
Typical of our Tarot series, there is a strange darker edge running through the scene, with other unnerving elements hidden within the imagery: a trail of ants eating the pick ’n mix spilled onto the sand, skulls lurking within the cliff face, a wasps waiting to sting, a crab, and a pirate ship in the distance being attacked by a kraken!

Some shots from our latest solo show ‘Imagine That!’ which opened at @proteinstudios in East London last Thursday.

The exhibition celebrated imagination through a playful, nostalgic lens, exploring how childhood wonder evolves, and is often challenged, as we grow older. It brought together many large hand-pulled silkscreen prints, collage, mixed-media canvases, sculpture, and large-scale installation works. 🩵
